How to become comfortable in a consistent state of uncertainty
Guest Post by Hayley Carr
A SMART WOMAN DOES NOT PLACE HERSELF IN A NEW BUSINESS VENTURE, OR A TRAVEL ADVENTURE, NEW ROMANCE OR NEW LIFE STAGE WITHOUT HAVING A STRONG DESIRE TO GROW, AND HAVE A RICH EXPERIENCE OF LIFE.
It's the catalyst behind the choices. And with these choices, inevitably comes a certain level of discomfort. Make that, a consistently large level of discomfort.
But the constant tightening knot in your stomach is no longer a market for success. It's not longer a requirement of a favourable outcome to have your head down and a furrowed brow due to the pressure and strain. If you're reading this, you're already aware - because you've most likely taken a leap.
But what do we do when the proverbial hits the fan? How are we actually supposed to think? And better yet: how do we do it on our feet, in the moment, when it matters?
Getting comfortable with a state of discomfort does not translate to 'just get used to having a knot in your stomach and possibly an ulcer in later life'. Or at lest it doesn't have to. Finding comfort in this discomfort is about reframing your situation so it expands and excites you.
This is a modern twist on 'when life gives you lemons'. Think: 'how to make lemonade - between your ears'.
From missing a train or a flight on your travels, to having high hopes for a relationship and everything seems to go wrong, to when business heads south, your ideas feel like fluff and execution feels like you're wading through honey; having the right mindset in the moment you need it - rather than retrospectively - gives you more options, more happiness, and more presence.
Here are 3 major Mindset Expanders You can Apply Right Now, that will turn your moments from furrowed brow into a Purple Cow:
1. IT'S MEANT TO FLOW
Why This Is Important: Take on this belief, and you will always find yourself in situations that work themselves out quickly, and with a great sense of ease. If you believe it is meant to be hard, that is also going to be your experience.
When you allow things to flow, you stop resisting what is going wrong. If a solution offered is way too hard, trust that there is always a better solution that will flow on from closing that door and opening another. The key here is trust.
And when you being to wonder why something goes awfully wrong in the first place:
2. LIFE IS ARRANGING THE WORLD IN YOUR FAVOUR
Why this is important: If it's not working, it's not right. Maybe not now, maybe not forever, and there's something better ahead. Chin up girl, face forward.
If options are being taken away, it's not because you're stupid, or the world hates you, or god put a hex on your head...it's because the universe is narrowing closer to the solution. It's happening for you. For Ease. For Flow.
Again, it is a choice to take this on, and to believe it. But when you're being thrown lemons, and you've missed the train, and you think it's the worst day on Earth, because now you're missing the plane and the meeting and the people and the experience, trust that there's something for you, right here.
Perhaps the world is keeping you safe from an encounter you may have had on that plane. Perhaps there is someone, right here, that you need to meet. Perhaps an extra unexpected day will give you the time to add some final extra touches to a creative project that makes the difference that wins you the work. It's a beautiful way to be right here, and totally happy about it.
3. YOU ARE SMART AND YOU WILL FIGURE IT OUT.
Why this is important. Because the way you speak to yourself (your internal scripts), dictate your experience of life.
Given the chance to figure things out on your own, you always will. Because you have to.
This one is a never-fail for us all, in every facet of life. If you tell yourself consistently you can figure it out, you won't immediately switch into "it's too hard" mode before you start something new. You drop the drama, and get on with the solution. And ultimately, you'll always come up with one. That's pretty satisfying.
Positive self talk will get you everywhere, baby. Don't doubt it. You have a choice about how the world sees you, and it starts with the way you see yourself.
These Major Mindset Expanders are quite intricately linked. They are all giving you more options, and bringing you back to the here and now, focusing forward.
Ultimately, that's how you keep your head up, remove the stomach knots, and sustainably, enjoyable ride the roller coaster of business, life, love, and travel.
